How-To

How can I trick the Steam Linux client into thinking it's running on a 32-bit system?

As daniel.mantione points out on Steam Universe:

Isn't it a better idea to make Steam launch the right version for you? In the startup options of the game you can usually do something like %command%.x86 in order to make Steam launch a 32-bit version.

How to make Steam think you are running on a 32 bit system is a good question, because we do not know how it detects 32/64 bit systems. The most extreme solution is to install a 32-bit Linux distribution, which you could run a 64-bit kernel in order to make sure it uses all your memory. As a less extreme option, maybe creating a chroot environment with a 32-bit distribution would also work.

ProfessorKaos64 says:

As with normal with Steam in-home streaming, the stream is a mere presentation of the host computer, and what it is running. If the host system is 64 bit, and the launch command on the host machine has not been altered, the game would more than likely run as 64 bit game. Altering launch commands on the host machine, or changing the streaming host for the game session.
