Sound VFX

In a video game, the experience and their sensations of a user/player is increased due to sound. Sound effects puts our hearing senses to be more alive and we feel immersive. Sound can be of different types, volumes, tone etc., to put more emphasis on certain things to enhance the experience and get users some sense of realism to enjoy. Some sound can give instant feedback to the user indicating that something has happened.

For this game, we decided to add sound effects to certain things to bring some ambience to the game. I collaborated with TEAM 2, to help them with sounds for a feature they were working on (WEATHER).

Nonetheless, my team also worked on features which we implemented sound for. We created a new menu in the game, which we thought needed some sound effect to give instant feedback to the user that an option has been clicked/selected. Choosing or creating the type of sound was very difficult. We needed something short and sweet, that wasn't too distracting and made sense. It couldn't be something like a fire sound as the whole theme of the game has to do with water.

Through some time, I realized that creating sounds from scratch with no knowledge about music, and worrying about the quality and format can lead to further issues in the game and just the overall experience. Then after some research I came across a website which had royalty free music/sound and images (stock images and sounds) that was free to use. After some clarification regarding citation and other stuff related to royalty free sound effects with the tutor, we went with this website (Pixabay). This website had hundreds of different options regarding sound, music images etc. But to find the right fit, it took some time. Some sound had to be trimmed down from the original length of it and some were taken with its full length like weather for a fuller ambient experience.

Below are the sounds we used, found from the website in collaboration with Team2.

All sounds used are Royalty Free Music/Sounds that is free to use for both personal and commercial use.
