Currently

  • Respec'ing XP is dependent on GM permission.
  • On level up, 3 XP are granted, which is not enough for some higher level things, like Attrib +2 -> +3
  • I could use 2XP on one power, and know I want a different 2XP power next, but not want to spent my 1XP, leaving it unused between levels 'dangling'
  • 1 XP is a lot, if only 3 are awarded.

We could

  • Always allow respec. Not sure of negatives in terms of changing character 'feel' between levels
  • Only allow respec for dangling XP, but I don't think an objective decision is possible.
  • Add XP per level, making a dangling XP feel less important
  • Do nothing - 'you just gotta wait'

On Re-speccing

I think Re-spec'ing is a good way for us to go in here. However, we may want to make this a milestone progression system to accommodate players and GMs alike.

For Example: Only on level-up you can re-spec up to 5 XP by exchanging existing Powers for new Powers or Attribute Level-ups.

I would be wary of players changing out skills or attributes between sessions, or adding a Power at the last minute without a GM being able to prepare - but if we make it only available on level-up or even at certain levels (Level 3, level 5, 8, and 10, etc.) might be a safe way to go. I would be curious to get other GM and Player feedback on this type of decision during Beta too, since this has a significant effect on how players and GMs will experience longer-term campaigns.

Adding XP

I think we'll want to take a look at the XP per level curve again based on the math for Powers and Attribute level-ups. If we keep the Attribute gain at a significant ramp like it currently is, we may want to consider upping the XP gain per level. We can then also raise the cost of Powers above a certain level as well, or maybe by pre-requirement and keep with the skill-tree feel. If we add more XP per level, to your point, and a Player gets 8 or 10 XP on level-up at level 5, for example, they might not care as much about 1 or 2 XP 'leftover' when they know they'll be using it the following level when they get 10 more XP to up their Strength to +4.

These are definitely important topics that we should align with a v1 stance on but keep in mind when we open up to the community to get their broader opinions and feedback on.

@D-D-2 likes the idea of players being able to respec on level-up, especially in long form campaigns.

Worth having a default House Rule #119 regarding respeccing to be explicit. Could be good to suggest additional optional limitations or ways that GMs can find the degree of respeccing allowed that they feel comfortable with.

Limitations or standard type of respeccing on level-up

Only on level-up, can't go negative on Attributes,

Do we limit number of total respecs in a character's lifetime?

Only allow -1 and -2 on Attributes at character creation as a limitation.

Work with GM, GM has final say about what respecting is and isn't allowed at their table.
