👋🏻
I'm Travis.
I've been building open source software professionally since 2005. I believe that open source software can be a tool for empowerment and have seen first hand the impact that open, participatory standards can have on our ability to effectively organize towards a better world.
After ten years in the Silicon Valley tech industry, I took a break in 2017 to take stock of my life and my role in the larger systems within which I was working. I spent a year working with the team at Whysaurus to rethink how we communicate with each other online and learning how to be a better anti-racist ally with SURJ San Francisco.
After this year of experimentation and growth, I started working with the CoLab Cooperative, building software for cooperatives, non-profits and other organizations focused on improving the material conditions of the lives of their constituents. During this time I have come to believe that we need to dramatically restructure our relationship with the software that mediates our daily lives and take back control over our "digital bodies" in a way that gives us true sovereignty over the data we create online.
To that end, I'm currently spending as much time as possible building itme, a Solid Pod hosting service designed to be your new home on the Web. Your sponsorship will allow me to spend more time building toward a better world and less time trying to navigate the complexities of surviving under capitalism.
