Opening this issue to share/discuss ideas to simplify Feature Matrix in README file.
Pain point: The spacing between feature category heading and progress bar is hard coded because monospace font in GitHub's version of Latex/MathJax doesn't have equal width of each character.
PS: I don't know how much effort we want to put in this.

The pain point that prompted this issue: we are already putting more than an ideal amount of effort into this. Things that would likely reduce that permanently, at a one time cost:
Not relying on explicit dependencies for updating the README
Not relying on apparent, implicit dependencies for README presentation (i.e. speculation about GitHub LaTeX rendering changes being the reason we put in additional effort)
Not relying on LaTeX
Not relying on much, if any, custom scripting to maintain the README
Minimizing or eliminating updates to README.md altogether
In general, the way other projects do this is with badge icons (which are usually generated by either the image URL, or something much less bespoke).
