Balance Meter (health bar): Drivers don't spin out immediately, only when they run out of Balance. Getting hit decreases balance, while driving without steering restores it.

Melee Combat (from Road Rash): Players can still fight while out of items.

Set item locations (from Blur, Kirby Air Ride): Introduces an aspect of strategy to item choice (although it requires multiple paths for AI)

Random items (from Mario Kart): Different rates depending on ranking to 1st place will let us "rubber-band" the players behind towards the leading players.
