  1. Mechanism for overriding notification behavior 

    `onDistinctItems` is called when the adapter receives new (distinct from
 previous) `items`. This allows for changing the notification behavior
 in a backward-compatible way e.g. from `notifyDataSetChanged() to
 `notifyItemRangeInserted()`.
