## The "AI effect" | ||

* Various types of classification problems: | ||
* Given a set of observations will this patient require hospitalisation? | ||
* Given a piece of patient feedback which of these 10 categories is it about? | ||
* Given an X ray is it probable that this patient has cancer? | ||
|
||
## No, really, tell me, what is AI? | ||
|
||
* There are two elements of a classification problem that can be "difficult" | ||
* Input | ||
* Computation | ||
* I'd really like to avoid calling anything AI if one or both of those things is not complex | ||
|
||

||
* Sometimes you see any predictive algorithm as "AI" | ||

## Deep learning predictions | ||
|
||
* Deep learning models meet a reasonable standard for "AI" | ||
* They model complex non linear relationships without any prior knowledge, rules, or models (a little bit like a human baby, in fact) | ||
* Deep learning models for prediction can absorb large numbers of variables and produce predictions based on highly complex relationships within the data, merely by being trained appropriately | ||
|
||
## Classifying patient experience feedback | ||
|
||
* Complex input | ||
* For comment theme- non complex computation (logistic regression) | ||
* For sentiment- transfer learning | ||
* Theme does not require intelligence- linear models of word counts suffice | ||
* Sentiment does require pretrained deep learning models of language | ||
* We can see intuitively that detecting sentiment is "harder" than theme | ||
|
||
## Large language models | ||
|
||
* Passes the Turing test (e.g. ChatGPT) | ||
* Can **not** make you coffee | ||
* The fundamental training is done by "masking" words and asking the model to predict them | ||
* ChatGPT has been called "a stochastic parrot" | ||
* Despite appearances, ChatGPT has no understanding other than a deep knowledge of the probabilistic structure of words in language | ||
|
||
## Summary | ||
|
||
* AI is lots of things and has been called lots of things | ||
* Even some apparently "intelligent" tasks are not really so intelligent when you know how they work | ||
* My own view is that a useful definition of AI includes: | ||
* Modelling complex nonlinear systems without an explicit model | ||
* Deep learning predictive algorithms meet this criterion, as do LLMs | ||
|
||
