Depends of this PR : OCA/sale-workflow#2325 .
The current PR add the possiblity to rent variants of a product template.
Some point of sale_rental module are not easy to plug into. Maybe after its migration, we can do a refactor or merge this module into sale_rental.
what do you think @alexis-via, @Murtaza-OSI ?
