Fermilab Computing Account – Steps

If you already have a Fermilab computing account you can skip these steps.

1. Requesting access

2. After the request has been accepted, you are given a default password for your Kerberos and Services accounts

3. Connecting to the LPC CAF (Central Analysis Facility)

  • People generally do not need this, since VPN isn’t needed for kinit, ssh, scp, sftp to cmslpc*.fnal.gov

Requesting Specific Account Access:

If you have applied for the CMS account in Step 1:

  • We need to apply for access to specific computing clusters E-906 (Drell-Yan) SeaQuest and E-1093 SpinQuest. Go to the Fermilab service desk to request computing accounts for these two specific experiments: https://fermi.servicenowservices.com/wp

Once there:

  • Click “Request Service”
  • Search for, or find in the list, “Experiment/Project/Collaboration Computing Account”
  • Fill in name, Kerberos Principal (username essentially), desired affiliation/experiment, your institution name
  • By default, keep “No” for Computing/IT Professional Access Only section
  • Then just wait for approval!

Repeat the procedure twice for E-906 (Drell-Yan) SeaQuest and E-1039 SpinQuest respectively.

If you are not part of CMS

Sometimes we might need to email Kun ([email protected]) and Nhan ([email protected]) to notify that we submitted our request to the SpinQuest machine.

Additional questions can be sent to Yongbin ([email protected]).
