Jonathan's code, cleaned up to work on a RaspberryPi

Jonathan Moore's code from 2010 was merged in, cleaned up, and made to work over a USB serial device on a RaspberryPi. This current state is known to work with 2pir, specifically for the A+I run in May of 2014.
