Customizing Prompt

  • PS1 environment variable can be modified to customize the prompts.
  • .bashrc or .bash_profile can be used permanently set the aliases.

Some Examples:-

export PS1=\h $ to get a prompt with <hostname> $
export PS1=\H $ to get a prompt with <hostname FQDN> $
export PS1=\u $ to get a prompt with <user name> $
export PS1=\w $ to get a prompt with <aboslute current working path> $
export PS1=\W $ to get a prompt with <current working directory> $
