Unfortunately, it has a few downsides: (1) it's still based on the old 3.x architecture; (2) it doesn't come with a full-fledged lexicon; and (3) it's still unfinished in many aspects and not thoroughly tested for bugs. The main reason for all of this is lack of time---besides working in a research project and starting my PhD studies (both unrelated to NLG), I can only devote time to SimpleNLG in my spare time.
I hope that my adaption might still be useful to someone at this stage. If anyone is interested in continuing the development (porting it to 4.x seems to be the highest priority), I will be glad to offer my assistance as much as time allows. Since ENLG 2011, I have received quite a number of e-mails asking about the current status of SimpleNLG for German, so the interest in the software is definitely there.
