.SH DESCRIPTION
.PP
.B autoddns
is a daemon which keeps track of the IP addresses configured on the
local system and keeps the host's DNS record up to date with those
addresses using Dynamic DNS (DDNS).

In relies on the \fBnsupdate\fR(8) utility (which comes with BIND) to make
the actual changes to DNS. \fBnsupdate\fR will be called using the command
line embedded in the
.B autoddns
command line and the actual update will be passed to it on its standard input.

When
.B autoddns
first starts, all of the IP addresses associated with the host are deleted
and replaced with a new set consisting of those that were learned by
scanning the local interfaces. Subsequently, changes to configured IP
addresses are noticed and submitted to
.B nsupdate
incrementally.

If the DNS name which is to be updated has a CNAME record, the target of
the CNAME will be updated instead of the record itself (recursively).

Enable IPv4 and disable IPv6 unless
.B -6
is also given. When IPv6 is disabled, IPv6 addresses on interfaces
will be ignores, and DNS AAAA records will be left alone.
By default, both IPv4 and IPv6 are enabled.

Enable IPv6 and disable IPv4 unless
.B -4
is also given. When IPv4 is disabled, IPv4 addresses on interfaces
will be ignores, and DNS A records will be left alone.
By default, both IPv4 and IPv6 are enabled.

Enable verbose mode. Many operations will be logged to stdout.

Run in the forgreound without detaching from the terminal.

Use the valid lifetime of IP addresses instead of the prefered lifetime
as the TTL for DNS records. This option applies only to IPv6 as IPv4
addresses do not have lifetimes.

Use the given value for the DNS TTL of DNS records that are created.
This option applies only to IPv4 as the address lifetime is used as
the DNS TTL with IPv6.

-m
For addresses with infinite lifetime, use the given value as the DNS
TTL. This option applies only to IPv6 as IPv4 addresses do not have
lifetimes.

-h
Update the DNS record for the given name instead of the local hostname.

-i
Select interfaces to monitor. By default, every interface is monitored.
Interface names can be prefixed with \fB!\fR to exclude them or not
prefixed to include them. Multiple interface names can either be given
in multiple
.B -i
options or in a single
.B -i
option and seperated with \fB,\fR. If interfaces are to be exluded,
then all other interfaces except the ones mentioned are included.
If interfaces are to be included, then all other interfaces except
the ones mentioned are excluded.

-a
Select IP addresses to monitor.
IP address specifications can be prefixed with \fB!\fR to exclude them or
not prefixed to include them. Multiple IP address specifications can
either be given in multiple
.B -a
options or in a single
.B -i
option and seperated with \fB,\fR. The filter for IPv4 addresses and IPv6
addresses is maintained seperately. The default action in case no
address specification matches an IP address depends on whether the last
specification was an include (no \fB!\fR) or an exclude (has \fB!\fR). If the
last specification was an include, then everything else will be excluded,
else everything else will be included. Address specifications take the form
\fIip-address\fB/\fIprefix-length\fR. By default, site local addresses are
excluded and all others are included. If any filtering is requested, the
default filter is not applied. Some addresses are always excluded even if
they would be matched by the filter: loopback, link-local (IPv6 only),
and multicast.
