I found I could add metadata (like id3 tags from mp3s) to a m4a file using ffmpeg.

ffmpeg -i input.m4a \
    -metadata title="Recording" \
    -metadata artist="American Crow" \
    -metadata album="BirdNet-Go" \
    -metadata year="2024" \
    -metadata genre="Birds" \
    -metadata comment="corvus_brachyrhynchos_75p_20241220T092645Z" \
    -c copy output.m4a

This lets you embed much richer data directly in to the audio file for cataloging, etc externally. if needed.

I'd like to add something like this if others feel it's a good idea.

It could be codec dependent -- some output files may not support metadata tags.
