How are Thumbnails Chosen

I am trying to get the RSS feed (relevant XML snipped included below) for my blog set up. When I reviewed it using Feeder I found that instead of using the specified image for the thumbnail it used the first picture in the post.

I am not sure if there is something wrong with the feed I have generated or if this is just how the thumbnail is selected. Any insight on the matter is greatly appreciated.

    <h3 id="overview">Overview</h3> <p>After making <a href="/minima-testing/2024/05/26/japanese_4_in_1.html">Japanese 4-in-1</a>, I wanted to try making more weaves in the <a href="/minima-testing/families#Japanese">Japanese</a> family. While looking for those weaves on <a href="https://www.mailleartisans.org/">M.A.I.L.</a>, I found documentation of the historic <a href="https://www.mailleartisans.org/weaves/weavedisplay.php?key=1154">Japanese 8-in-2</a> weave. Japanese 8-in-2 is a simple progression from Japanese 4-in-1 created by doubling each ring, vastly increasing the stability of the weave. Unfortunately, I could not find any tutorials, so I have written the included <a href="#tutorial">tutorial</a>.</p> <h3 id="materials">Materials</h3> <p>For the sample piece showcased in this post, I used two sizes of rings made by hand(bonus post coming soon) from 16 <abbr title="" data-tippy-content="Standard Wire Gauge &lt;a href=&quot;/minima-testing/glossary#standard_wire_gauge&quot;&gt;(Definition)&lt;/a&gt; ">SWG</abbr> Bright Aluminum wire purchased from <a href="https://theringlord.com/">The Ring Lord</a>. Its appearance is quite appealing, and as a sheet weave, it offers remarkable flexibility, making it suitable for various fabric-like applications. While not mandatory, using two sizes of rings enhances structural clarity and stability, especially when the vertical/joining rings are sufficiently small. In fact, when crafted with small enough rings, it can even serve structural purposes and be used in sculptures. So the logic which selects thumbnails is here:

It will consider media:thumbnail in your feed, as well as the first image in the post itself.

The reason for that is that some feeds (I'm looking at you blogspot) have crazy small resolution on their thumbnails which look really bad.

It tries to pick the largest thumbnail that it knowns about before even attempting to download an image from the article itself.

You do not include any width attributes for your media:thumbnail tags. That is why Feeder is falling back to fetching the image from the article instead.

Just put a width attribute of at least 640 pixels on your media:thumbnail tags and feeder will use them

Good evening @spacecowboy, I tried the method you suggested(resulting in the XML below) and the preview images that I see are still the first images in the post. I would greatly appreciate any advice on where I may have gone wrong with my XML or any advice on where else to look for any issues.

Did you try to remove the feed and add it again in Feeder? And are you pointing feeder to whatever local address you have for hosting the preview version above?

I did remove the feed and add it again in Feeder multiple times, I even changed the url and thus the id. To my knowledge I was pointing feeder to the local address I was using for testing. It displayed all posts and images(except for the correct thumbnail).

I actually just tested it on my github pages testing site and the same setup appears to work. Though it seems to have some issues with the logo's aspect ratio. Any advice you have on why it may not be working locally would be appreciated.

I'm not sure. It is possible that there is some filtering due to the private ip addresses.
