The 8mm shafts can be prepared to the necessary length with the required detents and retaining clip grooves using various processes. The tools required for their preparation will depend on which tools the builder has access to and feels most comfortable using. Alternatives include:
- Metalworking lathe
- Using a drill and Dremel to cut retaining clip grooves as documented here and using a vice and file to cut set screw detents as documented here.
