It probably isn't a good idea to go beyond minor version upgrade, as grails 3.x is a ground up rewrite so there is a lot of API changes.

But upgrading to 2.5.x is probably a good idea.

+1 to start with a minor version upgrade. However, at some point development of ver 2.x will stop and the system will need to upgrade to 3.x either way, I guess.
