Insert Citation from .bib-file not possible in VS Code, but works in RStudio

Hi!

I am currently switching from RStudio to Positron. I like to write text in the Visual Editor and frequently use the "Insert Citation" option. I prefer not to use Zotero within RStudio/VS Code, but rather export a bib-file from Zotero and keep it updated, provide it in bibliography: in the YAML-Header and choose the citation via the "Bibliography" Section in the "Insert Citation" window. It works perfectly well in RStudio (see the image with the white background attached), but it dosen't work in Positron (Image with dark background), although the setup is exactly the same (same bib-file, same working directory, same .qmd-file etc.). I then tried using the zotero library just to check the functionality, and that worked. So there's either a problem with the VS Code App and bib-files or I am doing something wrong.

Would be very greatful for advice!

I can't reproduce. It works exactly the same in VSCODE and Positron.
I did test with a simple bib file created with knitr::write_bib("rmarkdown", "bibliography.bib")

Can you provide your bib file ? Maybe something in it it making this fail.

Though visual editor should be the same in RStudio and VSCODE

As it is not possible to upload .bib-files here, I'll provide it below, as code. If you copy the chunk and save it as a bib-file, it should work. As I said, it works perfectly fine in RStudio, but not in Positron.

  abstract = {Abstract             The GLES Open Science Challenge 2021 was a~pioneering initiative in quantitative political science. Aimed at increasing the adoption of replicable and transparent research practices, it led to this special issue. The project combined the rigor of registered reports—a~new publication format in which studies are evaluated prior to data collection/access and analysis—with quantitative political science research in the context of the 2021 German federal election. This special issue, which features the registered reports that resulted from the project, shows that transparent research following open science principles benefits our discipline and substantially contributes to quantitative political science. In this introduction to the special issue, we first elaborate on why more transparent research practices are necessary to guarantee the cumulative progress of scientific knowledge. We then show how registered reports can contribute to increasing the transparency of scientific practices. Next, we discuss the application of open science practices in quantitative political science to date. And finally, we present the process and schedule of the GLES Open Science Challenge and give an overview of the contributions included in this special issue.           ,              Zusammenfassung             Die GLES Open Science Challenge 2021 war ein Pilotprojekt in der quantitativen Politikwissenschaft, die darauf abzielte, die Akzeptanz von replizierbaren und transparenten Forschungspraktiken zu erhöhen. How the political parties’ handled the Covid-19 crisis was therefore also said to have significantly influenced the 2021 federal elections in Germany-not least because of the strong focus on the pandemic during the election campaign . Based on fundamental assumptions of saliency theory, issue ownership theory, and issue framing, the issue competition strategies of political parties represented in the German Bundestag during the 19th electoral period regarding the Cov- id-19 pandemic are examined . For this purpose, it is analyzed how important it was pro- grammatically for the Bundestag elections in 2021 by means of content- and frequency- analytical methods, focusing in particular on party-specific differences and commonalities with regard to thematization strategies . The results show that in the 2021 federal election programs, the Covid-19 pandemic was an important valence-issue and that the established parties prioritized Covid-19 issues in areas of their own issue ownership . The Covid-19 crisis is apparently not only to be understood as a valence issue but also as a positional issue - an aspect that future work could take up and examine in more detail .},

  abstract = {There has been much talk of valence, consensus or competence politics but little theoretical explanation or empirical investigation of how this has arisen. In this article I argue that British political competition has become competence-based because the major parties and the electorate have converged on the dominant left–right dimension of British voting behaviour. As a result, commonly cited core vote explanations for party polarisation have only limited application. The electorate has converged on left–right issues, narrowing the policy space and the available positional strategies of political parties. A different pattern is found for the issue of Europe, and this is interpreted in light of possible causal mechanisms. The article offers a formal model for a rise in valence politics as parties and voters converge, and the implications are discussed for theories of party competition. I argue in favour of competence and salience-based theories of party strategy in place of a reliance on traditional spatial models.},

Zum ersten Mal seit 70 Jahren kommt eine - heterogen zusammengesetzte - Dreier-Koalition zustande. Nach der 16-jährigen Regierungszeit Angela Merkels fehlte ein Kanzlerbonus. Der Wahlkampf war zwischen den drei Parteien, die Kanzlerkandidaten aufgestellt hatten, durch eine hohe Dynamik gekennzeichnet. Armin Laschet, der Spitzenkandidat der wenig geschlossen agierenden Union, verspielte aufgrund schwerer Fehler im Wahlkampf den Vorsprung und trug maßgeblich zum klar schwächsten Ergebnis der Union in der Geschichte bei; Annalena Baerbock konnte trotz günstiger Rahmenbedingungen zwar den Stimmenanteil der Grünen mehr als verdoppeln, aber die Partei blieb maßgeblich wegen der wenig überzeugenden Kandidatin unter dem erwarteten Resultat. Sowohl die beiden Volksparteien (zum ersten Mal unter 50 Prozent) als auch die beiden Randparteien haben Stimmen verloren.           ,              The 20th Bundestag election had three winners (SPD, Alliance 90/Greens, FDP) and three losers (CDU/CSU, AfD, Die Linke). This is reflected in the formation of the government. For the first time in 70 years, a three-party coalition - heterogeneously composed - is formed. After Angela Merkel's 16 years in government, there was no chancellor's bonus. The election campaign was characterised by high dynamism between the three parties which all had nominated candidates for the office of the Chancellor. Armin Laschet, the leading candidate of the CDU/CSU, which did not act very cohesively, squandered the lead due to serious mistakes in the election campaign and contributed significantly to the CDU/CSU's clearly weakest result in history; Annalena Baerbock, despite favourable conditions, was able to more than double the Green Party's share, but the party fell short of the expected result, mainly due to the unconvincing candidate. Olaf Scholz, who was spared criticism from the left wing, profited from the weaknesses of both competitors and made the SPD the strongest force. The Liberals thus decided to change the camp. The CDU/CSU, with the AfD and the Left Party in opposition, is facing hard times. In Giovanni Sartori's terminology: the German party system is situated between a moderate and a polarised pluralism, as it was after the 2017 election. Both the two catch-all-parties (below 50 per cent for the first time) and the two fringe parties have lost votes.},

  abstract = {The 2021 federal election was special in several respects with regard to the role of the can- didates for chancellor . For the first time, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen entered the competition with their own candidate, resulting in a three-way race for chancellorship . In addition, for the first time in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany, the previous incumbent did not stand for re-election . Based on polling data it becomes evident that in the wake of Annalena Baerbock’s and Armin Laschet’s misconduct and scandals during the election cam- paign, both their popularity ratings and the vote shares of their respective parties declined significantly . It was only as a result of these failures involving his two competitors that Olaf Scholz - as the “Last Man Standing” - became the Germans’ preferred chancellor . Our analyses also suggest that the CDU/CSU would have done significantly better with Markus Söder as candidate for chancellor and would probably have won the federal election . Regarding the first-time nomination of a chancellor candidate by Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, we find that a preference for Annalena Baerbock had a significant and substantial effect on the green vote .},

  abstract = {Multiple debates were held on TV in the 2021 German federal election campaign between the chancellor candidates Armin Laschet (CDU/CSU), Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Annelena Baerbock (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) . For the last three televised debates (so-called „Trielle“), surveying viewers immediately before and immediately after the events and conducting real-time measurement of the candidates’ debate performance help understand their per- ception and impact . The debate performances of Scholz and Baerbock were rated signifi- cantly better than Laschet’s . The candidates used very different strategies . While Laschet focused surprisingly strongly on attack, Scholz pursued a classic incumbent strategy . The perceived performance of the chancellor candidates in the debates had a direct impact on their likability ratings, most strongly in the first broadcast . Overall, Scholz benefited the most from these debates . Baerbock, but especially Laschet, failed to close the gap on the SPD . Our analyses underscore the impact of televised debates and their outstanding impor- tance in election campaigns .},

  abstract = {Cognitive dissonance theory predicts that the act of voting for a candidate leads to a more favorable opinion of the candidate in the future. We find support for the empirical relevance of cognitive dissonance to political attitudes. We examine the presidential opinion ratings of voting-age eligibles and ineligibles two years after the president's election. We find that eligibles show two to three times greater polarization of opinions than comparable ineligibles. We find smaller effects when we compare polarization in opinions of senators elected during high turnout presidential campaign years with senators elected during nonpresidential campaign years. The usual duel between an incumbent chancellor and the candi- date of the second strongest party therefore did not materialize . Instead, three chancellor candidates from different parties competed for the leadership of the country . The election campaign was volatile and opinion surveys show many ups and downs .   abstract = {Mit Rückblick auf den Wahlkampf und das Ergebnis der Bundestagswahl 2013 stellt sich die Frage, ob die beiden Kanzlerkandidaten von Union und SPD geeignet für den Stimmenzugewinn ihrer Parteien waren. Gemessen wird dies nicht nur an der Bewertung der Kandidaten durch die Wählerschaft, sondern auch daran, inwieweit sich diese auf die Wahlchancen der Parteien übertragen. Analysen auf der Grundlage von forsa-Daten lassen erkennen, dass Angela Merkel ihre exzellenten Popularitätswerte auch in Wahlabsichten zugunsten der Unionsparteien übersetzen konnte. Hinsichtlich Peer Steinbrück fällt das Resümee weniger eindeutig aus. Im unmittelbaren Vergleich mit der Amtsinhaberin war er klar unterlegen. Im Vergleich zu den innerparteilichen personellen Alternativen war er jedoch nicht weniger prädestiniert als andere sozialdemokratische Spitzenpolitiker. Darüber hinaus zeigt sich, dass er den Wahlchancen der SPD weit weniger geschadet haben dürfte, als von vielen Kritikern vermutet. Die Dynamik der Bewertung des SPD-Kanzlerkandidaten deutet insgesamt darauf hin, dass die Ereignisse in der Medienberichterstattung scheinbar in ein Gesamtsaldo der Bewertung einfließen, das mit der Zeit an Stabilität gewinnt.},

  abstract = {Despite the measured pace of American elections, there have now been a number of presidential campaigns since the advent of survey studies of voting. However sparingly, political history slowly has added to the set of distinct configurations of men and events which comprise a contest for the Presidency. The set is still small, whatever the impression created by massed thousands of interviews or by the accompanying files of election returns. Yet it is now large enough to be pressed hard for evidence about the sources of electoral change.                            A primary virtue of measurements extended over a series of elections is that they can throw light on the problem of change. So long as the earliest voting studies were confined to cross-sectional relationships, they could deal only very inadequately with changes superimposed on these relationships or with changes in the relationships themselves. In the case of Lazarsfeld's enormously influential Erie County study in 1940, the natural limitations of a single-election study were compounded by the investigators' misfortune in choosing a campaign whose dominant personality and principal issues differed little from those of preceding elections. I have often wondered whether the static social determinism of               The People's Choice               would have emerged from a campaign in which the tides of short-term change were more nearly at flood.                          I shall examine here some sources of change which are richly evident in the presidential elections of the last two decades.},

  abstract = {The use of spatial ideas to interpret party competition is a universal phenomenon of modern politics. Such ideas are the common coin of political journalists and have extraordinary influence in the thought of political activists. Especially widespread is the conception of a liberal-conservative dimension on which parties maneuver for the support of a public that is itself distributed from left to right. This conception goes back at least to French revolutionary times and has recently gained new interest for an academic audience through its ingenious formalization by Downs and others. However, most spatial interpretations of party competition have a very poor fit with the evidence about how large-scale electorates and political leaders actually respond to politics. Indeed, the findings on this point are clear enough so that spatial ideas about party competition ought to be modified by empirical observation. I will review here evidence that the “space” in which American parties contend for electoral support is very unlike a single ideological dimension, and I will offer some suggestions toward revision of the prevailing spatial model.},

  abstract = {Following five hypotheses derived from the research literature, the results of the 2021 Ger- man federal election are analyzed on several dimensions: The voting behavior of East and West Germans differs in particular with regard to CDU/CSU and the Green Party, both with electoral strongholds in the West, and the AfD (right-wing populist party) as well as Die Linke (socialist party), both with above-average shares of vote in the East . In this respect, “two German electorates” (Dalton / Bürklin) still exist more than three decades after German reunification . Within those regions, however, clear geographic patterns on a larger scale (e .g ., between the north and the south) are not discernible . The situation chang- es at the city and district levels where considerable differences, especially for the Green Party and the AfD, can be found .
