In Synthetik, there is a system for partial randomization of guns where in addition to the actual gun, the gun has one of a large list of variants which modifies stats and other things. I am proposing a similar system for here.
How It Would Work
Tools/guns spawned in on ruins will get a random modifier from a large list of pre-determined variants. The variant of the item can be seen on closer-examine, because why not. These variants would also have the name of a company/faction attached to them, because flavor is nice and having factions get real representation in-game is nice. Tools/guns created with a printing device will have the same base modifier (fabricated, so thus cannot be different without a major defect) unless a variant "disk" (findable randomly in ruins?) is inserted (and activated, probably with a checkbox in the UI?)
This modifier would apply permanent stat modifiers to the tool, which can vary wildly. You can look at Synthetik modifiers to get a good idea of what these should look like. In general, the modifiers will make an item better in some situations and worse in others over the base item, with a few, rare modifiers being direct upgrades. This modifier could not be changed
Why this would be good for the game
A bit of flavor and variety to spice up the game is always neat. In Synthetik, I find myself getting attached to guns with modifiers that synergize well, and I believe the same could happen in SS13 to a lesser extent. A few things (such as making a reliable source of ammo and making carrying 50 guns unfeasible) would need to happen before-hand, but a variants system could be a nice addition on top of what we have now.
