I have never dealt with the development of any DE. So, I have no idea how it is done in terms of organizing that. But I have spent SOME hours for customizing DEs for personal use.

So, when I install a DE I usually do the following things and repeat them as stated:

• Rearrange the menu, once and maybe after I have installed a new app
• Create 3-4 toolbars and set app icons, once and maybe after I have installed a new app
• Choose theme, once and maybe after some years later
• Set background image, once and maybe after some years later
• Check the options of the DE and choose features to activate (eg plugins), once and maybe after some years

The first two take most of the time; it depends upon previous experience with the DE itself.
The next two take about 5-15 minutes; it depends upon the number of the themes and images are available.
The last one take about 15-120 minutes; it depends upon the number of the options are available.

Have you ever wondered how much time the users spend customizing a DE, what features are of high priority, etc?
Have you ever carried out a search or everything is left to what developers want or believe?
How do the developers themselves use the DE?
What features do they use and how often do they change them?
How often changing DE options is the ideal? IMHO, the less the better!
How much time spending in DE is the ideal? IMHO, the less the better!

All above questions are rhetorical ones.

IMHO, the ideal DE is the one:

• you set it up once and forget it,
• never bothers you,
• never reminds you that it exists, and
• you feel very happy/calm every time you log in.
