Preferred term label:
Abdominal ureter FMA:15882 (left FMA:15885, right FMA:15884) FMA-->abdominal part of ureter
Pelvic ureter FMA:15883 (left FMA:15887, right FMA:15886) FMA --> pelvic part of ureter

Synonyms
Abdominal ureter--> Proximal ureter
Pelvic ureter--> Distal ureter

Definition (free text, please give PubMed ID)
Abdominal ureter: Part of ureter between the renal pelvis and the pelvic brim. Its inferior boundary is indicated by the bifurcation of the common iliac artery (to form the internal and external iliac arteries).

Pelvic ureter: Part of ureter within the pelvic cavity. Its superior boundary is indicated by the bifurcation of the common iliac artery (to internal and external iliac arteries).

Thank you for your request @emquardokus, I am preparing the six terms to be added and I have a doubt on the nomenclature.
From a pubmed search I can see that proximal (584)/distal (1153) ureter is more used than abdominal (10)/pelvic (255) ureter. Would be ok to use proximal/distal and add abdominal/pelvic (also upper/lower) as exact synonyms? Thank you!

@aleixpuigb this is really interesting since the terminology is coming from the GUDMAP consortium nomenclature working group rather than a single person.
Agree with you.
Let's also put in upper ureter = proximal ureter = abdominal ureter
distal ureter = pelvic ureter = lower ureter
It also appears there is a 3rd segment called intramural.
The ureter is anatomically and functionally divided into 3 segments: proximal, distal, and intramural.
Check this reference: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK532980/
"The proximal ureter (abdominal or upper ureter) is the segment extending from the renal pelvis to the iliac bifurcation. This region is buried mostly within the retroperitoneal fat, except where it passes directly over the psoas muscle. Thus, the proximal ureter can be hard to identify surgically."
"The ureter is anatomically and functionally divided into 3 segments: proximal, distal, and intramural. The proximal ureter (abdominal or upper ureter) is the segment extending from the renal pelvis to the iliac bifurcation."
"The distal ureter (pelvic or lower ureter) extends from the iliac bifurcation to the bladder.[11]" Lescay HA, Jiang J, Leslie SW, et al. Anatomy, Abdomen and Pelvis Ureter. [Updated 2024 May 5]. Thank you! Yes, this reference is very helpful, and I was also wondering if we should add intramural. I have seen than in other mammals they use more the limit at the iliac bifurcation rather than the pelvic brim, so i will use that limit for proximal (lower limit) and distal (upper limit) ureter.

Definition (free text, please give PubMed ID)
The terminal segment of the ureter that is continuous with the distal ureter and lies where the ureter enters the bladder. The intramural ureter is aperistaltic, serving as a reflux-preventing mechanism, preventing the backflow of urine from the bladder into the ureters. PMID:30422575, PMID:14142154
