Prototype server pupose is not clear

I have read the docs, but I cannot get what the 'npm run proto' or 'kyt proto' is for. I understand what it does, I do not understand why it is there

As far as I understand it's used to build components in isolation from the other codebase. I get the use case but feel like the setup is not really fulfilling yet. I'm curious if something like Storybook would be more suited for this project and if it could replace the prototype command entirely. It's more battle tested, looks great and it's quite easy to get working within the project.
