Can't launch Moondance Stepmania from command line

Hi, not so much a bug as a point of confusion :D I love Moondance, I'm trying to set up to launch it with a script (so I can trigger it from the home automation on my media centre without plugging in a keyboard) but I can't get it to load from a non-gui script, even with display=0.0 in the command line or exported. Is it using some weird method to grab the current display, and is there a way round this?
