Is it possible that this will work with IDML as well as INDD? IDML would be so useful.

Good question, not sure if idml behaves the same way when placing it. If yes it would be a matter of adding the file extension to the selection dialog. Curious what's your use case though.

@egoater: working on the assumption that placing idml files is handled the exact same way as indd files I have added this in a test branch:

I currently have only limited options of testing this. Can you please check if that works?

Ok, I will need to dig into that and see if it's a mistake in my added code or if the idml doesn't work that way. Can't really promise to do it very soon since I don't have access to ID on my home computer and there currently is little time for this during my work days.

One idea for a potential workaround:
Peter Kahrel had/has a batch conversion script that could at least make this a 2 step automated process:

I don't know if that still works but worth a try.
