Is @mui/styles intended to be a pinned peer dependency?

I'm getting the following "unmet peer dependency" issue right now:

  └── ✕ unmet peer @mui/[email protected]: found 5.16.7

It looks like, out of all the peer dependencies listed in package.json, the @mui/styles peer dependency is the only one pinned to an exact version rather than using semver. Is this intentional? If so, why?
