所谓 NaN Trick ,就是指在现行的浮点数二进制标准 IEEE 754 中,指数位全1时,表示这并不是一个数字。它用来表示无穷大,以及数字除 0的结果。也就是说,一个浮点数是不是数字,只取决于它的指数部分,和尾数部分无关。现实中的处理器,只会产生一种尾数全为 0 的 NaN。所有尾数不为 0 的 NaN 值,都可以看成是刻意构造出来的值。换句话说,处理器只会产生值为 0xfff8000000000000 的 NaN ,大于它的值都可以用作其它用途,且能和正常的浮点数区分开。
Double 类型的尾数位有 52 位,而在 32 位平台上,仅需要 32 位即可表示 Lua 支持的除数字以外的所有类型(主要是指针),剩下的位置来保存类型信息足够了。当 Lua 5.2 开启 NaN Trick 编译选项时,简单的把前 24 位设置为 7FF7A5 来标识非数字类型,留下 8 位储存类型信息。
对于目前 Lua 5.2 的实现,NaN Trick 对于 64 位平台是没有意义的。因为指针和 double 同样占用 8字节的空间。不过,64 位平台上,地址指针有效位只有 48 位,理论上也是可以利用 NaN Trick 的,但这样会增加代码复杂度,且在 64位平台上节约内存的意义相对较小,Lua 5.2 的实现就没有这么做了。倒是在 LuaJIT 2.0 中,对 64位平台,同样采用了这个技巧
