Status View button appears to do nothing

I have tried many settings but fail to see what the status button does. When click on it nothing happens, whether I have the progress bar on or not. What is it meant to do. I though it might jump down and let me see the progress bar like the comments button does? This is either a bug or I totally don't understand how it works and what it is meant to do

I agree; I haven't been able to figure out what the status button is supposed to be showing me the status of.

For the teacher, I am wondering if it is supposed to show students' progress status (i.e. where they are in the sequence of content pages); if this is the case we should not be able to see anything until the content is being actively engaged with by students (not during the process of creating the content which is what I am doing right now).
