With the merge of the weather & climate explorer, we have to think about when to introduce and select RCPs.

The weather / climate plots are shown in the following order:

  1. KDE / stripes plot (depending on aggregation selection)
  2. parallel coordinates plot
  3. climate indices

Large portions of the RCP explanation come with the parallel coordinates plot, so the inclusion of RCPs in the KDE / stripes plot is somewhat of an anticipation.

We could exclude climate data from the KDE / stripes plot and use those charts exclusively to examine weather data, but we would lose a lot of information that way.
We could also show the KDE/stripes plot without climate projections in a first step and include them in a next step, this would briefly hint at the RCPs that are explained in more detail with the parallel coordinate plot.

The KDE plot is generally a rather difficult to understand introduction of the weather data. Maybe we can come up with a better introduction to the data for the story mode.
For example, it would be possible to show the parallel coordinate plot without RCPs.

Yet another option would be to create a description-only 'selection' step into the story mode, that looks like the RCP selection. This step will introduce RCPs in detail, as they are the key to the whole app. From my understanding, the RCPs are linking the risky weather observation data to the Knightian uncertain future development of our climate.

Then we would introduce RCPs whenever a user enters any of the three sub-explorers and will always be displayed if the app is a) in story mode and b) the RCP overview page was not already shown during the session.

The RCP selection can then get rid of the long text and use a shorter reminder and present the RCP videos again for selection.

I think this would provide a proper frame for introducing RCPs on the one hand and a consistent information flow on the other hand. The question wether the KDE plots need more explanation or should be simplified a little bit are a bit of a different issue, but I feel the same as @AlexDo1

So, @cojacoo what you think of this suggestion?
