Provide mechanism to serialize/restore viewer state

When deep linking the UI, it would be very useful if we could save any user annotations and the zoom state so they could be restored at a later time.

Maybe a message to request state notifications, a message posted in beforeUnload (though that may be a bit racy) and a way to trigger a notification (save button or timer).
