I would like to add a user status feature to the Element Desktop chat app, allowing users to set and display their current status (e.g., "Out of Office," "In a Meeting," "Available," etc.).
Why would you like to do it?
In our company, with over 300+ users of Element, people currently change their display names to indicate their status (such as "OOO" for "Out of Office") because there is no dedicated feature for this. This approach notifies everyone in every channel, which can be disruptive. Having a dedicated status feature would allow users to share more information about themselves and their working status in a more efficient and non-intrusive manner. This would enhance communication and collaboration within the company.
How would you like to achieve it?
The user status feature can be implemented similarly to other messaging apps:
Users can set their status through a dedicated option in their profile settings.
The status can be displayed next to the user's name with an icon and tooltip.
Hovering over the user's name would show their status, providing quick and easy access to this information without changing the display name.
This could be done on the desktop app first which I assume is the app with most usage in a work context.
Then rolled out to other platform if successful, (same as mark as unread?)
Have you considered any alternatives?
Yes - Using the name field
Additional context
No response
