checkunion in cq_cad_tools.py#L66
should check if 'Enable STEP Compound merge' is checked on FC preferences.
This option checked would void the union checking.
The variable is 'ReadShapeCompoundMode':

paramGetVS = FreeCAD.ParamGet("User parameter:BaseApp/Preferences/Mod/Import/hSTEP")
ReadShapeCompoundMode_status=paramGetVS.GetBool("ReadShapeCompoundMode")
