The village that built its own wi-fi network
With data costs in South Africa amongst the highest on the continent, how can poor rural communities be expected to get online and join the fourth industrial revolution?

Well, the village of Mankosi has been at the forefront of an experiment to bridge the internet gap and make cheap wi-fi a reality.

And it's a project that could have major implications for similar communities around the world.

A thread on A Radically New Internet - A Study on P2P Protocols and Mesh Networks that I have been following:

I think this is a big topic and a very exciting one, where we'll have a good crowd to explore together:

  • @luandro's experience building decentralized infra and community-first apps in his community in Brazil
  • @nicopace's interviews and current role as Movement Building Coordinator at APC for LOCNET and community networks, and possibly showing the final form of the LibreRouter
  • We'll have three local leaders in their community networks through APC supported by the Global Fellowship program sharing with us their experience on the ground building infrastructure in remote communities
  • Working with ISOC team that organizes the Indigenous Connectivity Summit hoping we'll have participation from both their local community network stewards and program organizers
  • Many participants from People’s Open, the mesh network operating in Oakland, including @maisutton
  • @jonah-archive can share with us our experience in sourcing Internet to DWeb Camp for this event, not far from SF where ubiquitous connectivity is a norm
  • @Karissa may be able to share some stories from @digidem about local empowerment of networked technologies
  • @mitra42 and @bnewbold's projects around local access IA server on the meshnet #3 & Research Library Services #14

I think it's an excellent opportunity to explore a complex topic, looking at community governance, infrastructure resiliency, technologies and limitations, local knowledge and how that relates to agency and dependencies...

I think we need someone to take lead on this project and connect threads, create enough structure for us to explore these topics together.
