Attempting to use test data after setting up checks for another dataset makes app crash

This is probably due to the persistence of the variable values selected by the user in the Setup tab. However, we want those values to persist for convenience to the user. Possible solutions are hiding the "Use test data" button and replacing it with a "Clear dataset" button, for example, to manually clear variables from the check setup.
