Does confluent-schema-registry writes to _schemas in avro format.

I am trying to backup/restore the _schema topic reference: https://docs.confluent.io/platform/current/schema-registry/installation/deployment.html#backups-using-command-line-tools. Is the content of the "_schemas" topic used by the Confluent Schema Registry stored in Avro format?
