DOM element could be not a <input>?

I would like to trigger/show the date picker when user click an element that is not an input, for example a or a .

I've tried with a button element.
It seems working on Chrome, but not on Safari andFirefox.

The trigger element has to be a input only, or there's a way to achieve what I would like to have.
Not sure if possible or I'm forcing the plugin to do something not intended to :)
