Making it easier to export images with custom highlighting/syntax rules

In the development of a relatively small programming language, it often comes that syntax highlighting is at most limited to ide extensions in vs code, atom, etc.

Creating such an extension requires to use of custom syntax rules: (defining tokens, special sequences, etc). Making it easier to have carbon take in custom language rules could make exporting images much easier. The only workaround I have found is loading the carbon extension, highlighting the custom code, and then generating the image. If this could be done more easily by allowing more customizability, it would be greatly be appreciated, if not already implemented.
