<h3>Introduction to GNU Screen</h3>
<p>
Screen is a full-screen window manager that multiplexes a physical terminal
between several processes, typically interactive shells. Each virtual
terminal provides the functions of the DEC VT100 terminal and, in addition,
several control functions from the ANSI X3.64 (ISO 6429) and ISO 2022
standards (e.g., insert/delete line and support for multiple character sets).
There is a scrollback history buffer for each virtual terminal and a
copy-and-paste mechanism that allows the user to move text regions between
windows. When screen is called, it creates a single window with a shell in
it (or the specified command) and then gets out of your way so that you can
use the program as you normally would. Then, at any time, you can create new
(full-screen) windows with other programs in them (including more shells),
kill the current window, view a list of the active windows, turn output
logging on and off, copy text between windows, view the scrollback history,
switch between windows, etc. All windows run their programs completely
independent of each other. Programs continue to run when their window is
currently not visible and even when the whole screen session is detached
from the users terminal.
</p>
<h3>Downloading GNU Screen</h3>
<p>
GNU Screen can be found on
<a href="http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/screen/">http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/screen/</a>
[via http] and
<a href="ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/screen/">ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/screen/</a>
[via FTP].
It can also be found on one of <a href="https://www.gnu.org/prep/ftp.html">our FTP mirrors</a>;
please use a mirror if possible.
</p>
<h3>Source Code</h3>
<p>
You can get the source code
<a href="https://savannah.gnu.org/git/?group=screen">from here</a>.

<h3>Documentation</h3>
<p>
FOO documentation can be found at
<a href="/manual/">http://www.gnu.org/manual/</a>.
You may also find more information about FOO by running
<em>info foo</em>, <em>man foo</em>, or looking at
<em>/usr/doc/foo/</em> or <em>/usr/local/doc/foo/</em>
on your system.

<h3>Mailing Lists</h3>
<p>
GNU Screen has two mailing lists:
<a href="mailto:[email protected]"><[email protected]></a> and
<a href="mailto:[email protected]"><[email protected]></a>.
</p>
<p>
The main discussion list is
<a href="mailto:[email protected]"><[email protected]></a>,
and is used for discussion and requests for help with using GNU Screen.
</p>
<p>
There is a separate list used for development discussions:
<a href="mailto:[email protected]"><[email protected]></a>.
</p>
<p>
Announcements about GNU Screen and most other GNU software are made on
<a href="mailto:[email protected]"><[email protected]></a>.
</p>
<p>
To subscribe to these or any GNU mailing lists, please send an empty mail with
a Subject: header line of just "subscribe" to the relevant -request
list. For example, to subscribe yourself to the Screen discussion
list, you
would send mail to <a href="mailto:[email protected]"><[email protected]></a>
with no body and a Subject: header line of just "subscribe". Or you can
use the <a href="http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/screen-users">mailing
list web interface</a>.
</p>
<!-- very unlikely
<p>
Currently, there is one newsgroup dedicated to FOO -
<a href="news:gnu.foo">gnu.foo</a>.

<!-- Regarding copyright, in general, standalone pages (as opposed to
files generated as part of manuals) on the GNU web server should
be under CC BY-ND 4.0. Please do NOT change or remove this
without talking with the webmasters or licensing team first.
Please make sure the copyright date is consistent with the
document. For web pages, it is ok to list just the latest year the
document was modified, or published.
If you wish to list earlier years, that is ok too.
Either "2001, 2002, 2003" or "2001-2003" are ok for specifying
years, as long as each year in the range is in fact a copyrightable
year, i.e., a year in which the document was published (including
being publicly visible on the web or in a revision control system).
There is more detail about copyright years in the GNU Maintainers
Information document, www.gnu.org/prep/maintain. -->
