In GDAL 3.9.0 there is a new driver GDAL GTI. It overcomes the indexing limitation of the VRT format. Since there could be thousands of individual raster files in a composite FIM map, GTI is a superior format for flows2fim use case.

In version 1.0.0 it should be the default format, with the hope that GDAL >3.9.0 will be the norm.
