I don't buy this hysterical 'no sudo with npm install -g'. The OP is linking to one specific issue caused by a bug which was quickly fixed. In general, it works correctly, as per npm/npm#3139 (comment),

Now I slightly begin to buy it ;-) BTW, this should be added to FAQ somewhere I think (the link to the article where they show how to set -g path to user-local one, or just take excerpt if it is short enough).

Is not good practice to use sudo npm whatever nix systems because it can change the permissions of many other things and Amber team should *not endorse the wrong practice.
