I have found that prolonged chording with thumbs makes my hand hurt, and furthermore some of the frequently used keys in my numpad layer require some twisting. Notably, the 0 and decimal point are awkward, since they are directly adjacent to one of the keys I have to hold down for the "adjust" layer that contains my numpad. I can sort of work around it by engaging num-lock, but then I have to remember to disengage num-lock when I am done with numbers.

Stuff to consider while redesigning:

  • how important is it to stick with momentary holds for NAV, SYM, and NUM? could I gain a lot of comfort simply by learning to use them as tap layers? (and if so, do I want one-shot &sl stuff, or persistence with an off key, or a tap dance incorporating both?)
  • would moving the numbers around help? I am very used to gridded numpads, but with only three rows, dealing with 0 and . is problematic, even if I lean on thumb keys to help--but, if I rearrange the numbers, where do the operators go?
  • would it be better to spread the numbers across both hands? I would have to rearrange the F keys or send them to a different layer, but that might be okay.
  • how does num-word fit in? I think I would have to pull in a fork (or forked module) but it might be well worth it, especially if it lets me release my thumbs while doing numeric entry

Things have gotten a little better since I added vertical combos for numerals. They are still a little awkward to type, but at least they do not cause thumb pain!

Still worth considering a layer with numbers close to home positions and nice use of num_word.
