Q1: What are three new things you have learned about yourself and your ego as a result of the core learning?

A1: The biggest thing I have learned is that I have a tendency to offer my opinion when it is not warranted.
I feel pretty good with my conscious listening skills but have lots of room for improvement in terms of looping.
I have also learned the importance of making meditation a daily activity – you think you can get away with doing
it every now and then, but it’s so much easier and more effective if you practice daily. Finally, I have learned
that I have a fixed mindset in a few areas meaning I have been stopping myself from improving for fear of failure.
Learning about a growth mindset has been hugely helpful for me.

Q2: What are the role of values, empathy and self-awareness in learning and programming?

A2: Values, empathy, and self-awareness are important in learning because without these three things I would be
blind to learning anything from peers/teachers. One value of mine in regards to learning is that everybody knows
something I don’t. Therefore, everyone has something I can learn from them. In programming these ideas are important
as I will spend a lot of my time working with other people – if I am not self-aware or empathetic some people will
find me very difficult to work with.

Q3: What has surprised you the most about the core learning?

A3: That these ideas aren’t taught in schools, even at a tertiary level (in my experience). I have always valued these
things but to have them laid out in an instructive format has been incredibly helpful, and I’m stoked that it is part
of our curriculum – it gives me confidence in this course.

Q4: What were the most challenging aspects of the core learning?

A4: I found listening/looping really difficult! This has shown me that it’s definitely a skill I need to work on, and
thanks to the core learning I know why it’s so important.

Q5: Why do you think we, a programming school, are spending so much time focusing on core learning in a web development
bootcamp course?

A5: Because this course is training us for the real world, and all these skills are going to be incredibly helpful when
we step out into the workplace.

Q6: Does the time you spent studying core learning here feel like a waste of time? Should you have just used that time to
practicing programming instead? Justify your answer.

A6: No way! Programming is a way of thinking, and in order to think properly and effectively I need to use all the tools I
can to my advantage.
