<h6>Neuroplasticity</h6>
Neuroplasticity is the ability of our brain to change based on what we are thinking, doing, and paying attention to.
It does this by creating and/or releasing neural pathways. The more often we repeat an activity or thought, the stronger
that neural pathway gets. The same goes for activities or thoughts we have stopped; those neural pathways weaken.
This is the main concept that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) uses to help people with anxiety and depression –
releasing old, ‘negative’ neural pathways and replacing them with new, ‘positive’ pathways. I use the terms negative and positive
lightly here, as our brain doesn’t know the difference, it only knows which neural pathways have worked for it in the past.
<h6>Growth Mindset</h6>
Growth Mindset is a way of thinking which allows a person to dive into almost any situation without fear of failure.
Someone with a growth mindset views ‘failure’ at something as nothing other than a learning opportunity –now they know
what not to do next time! The alternative to a growth mindset is a fixed mindset. People holding this mindset view failure
as some form of proof that they are not good enough, and will avoid this failure at all costs.
<p> </p>
It is important to mention that every person may use either one of these mindsets in various different areas throughout life,
dependant on their circumstances, upbringing, nature etc. For example, I have a fixed mindset in the area of art – I can’t draw
to save myself! With knowledge of the growth mindset and neuroplasticity however, I know that given enough time with proper help,
I could draw! I may never become a famous artist, as I would be starting late in life, but who knows? I personally believe that if
I had the freedom and time in my life to dedicate myself to any one thing I could truly excel, and same goes for anyone!
<p> </p>
There have been many times in my life where a fixed mindset has prevented progress for me, and I have used things like Emotional
Freedom Technique (EFT aka Tapping) to help me overcome this. This technique is very helpful for when I have emotional blocks around
a subject, and clears those strong, ‘negative’ neural pathways, allowing space for new, ‘positive’ ones to form. EFT has the same
goal in mind as CBT, it is just my preferred method and some studies have shown it can work faster!
<p> </p>
If you have never heard of EFT/Tapping and would like to know more, my mum Barbara is a practitioner, and her website has heaps of information.
Click <a href="https://empoweryou.co.nz/about-eft/" target="_blank" style="text-decoration: underline">here</a> for her website!
