actix_redis protocol error

By following the example here. https://github.com/actix/examples/blob/master/database_interactions/redis/src/main.rs

I get this:

---->Error("ERR Protocol error: expected \'$\', got \':\'")

This seems like something related to the encoder.

what version of redis are you running (in case it matters) ?
