Wave Defence Gamemode - Outline
I’ll preface this post with: The medium to long term goal for this fork is still to provide a large, open world, survival role playing gamemode for SS14.
Producing a wave defence gamemode right now gives us a few options and benefits I’ll list below:
Rounds and Gameplay
The game is focused on players being the defending force and an AI attacking force. As players are killed they may be able to take over AI roles.
The round starts with players spawning in on a fairly small and intimate map and having some time to familiarise themselves with the map and each other, before a timer starts counting down to the first round (pre round). Once round 1 starts, enemies spawn around the edge of the map at defined random spawn points.
The wave ends officially once all enemies are killed, however the timer continues once the round starts, and players will have a set time to clear enemies if they want a respite between waves. If they don’t clear all enemies then the next wave starts, giving the players no time to repair defences or heal up. Wave intensity also scales with amount of players, giving a fair baseline.
Waves increase in difficulty as the round goes on, with the amount of enemies and their strength, variety, aggression and abilities increasing. The round officially ends once all player survivors are killed. As players are killed their wave / time of death is recorded for the final scoreboard, ideally with a leaderboard keeping score between rounds for ultimate bragging rights.
All gameplay mechanics that are developed will still be available in this mode such as construction, crafting, medical, bartending etc do you still have room to roleplay. The locations can also be themed after popular franchise locations as well as the enemy mobs and survivors taking on themes from the franchise.
Hope that clears up some thoughts on the gamemode. As I say this will allow us to open the server up public, giving people something fun to play in small to large groups, and allows us to keep developing in the background for the eventual full wasteland role play release. Thanks,
