This role is with the Production Engineering (PE) team within the Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) group. You will be working on building and deploying industry leading Openstack infrastructure and building tools and monitoring to ensure high availability to our customers. We are looking for motivated, self-driven engineers with a clear understanding of operational practices and standards who are able to clearly communicate with customers and engineering partners.
Responsibilities
Deploy high availability infrastructure across Verizon Media and Verizon datacenters.
Work within a fast-paced group delivering key components of IaaS infrastructure.
Develop quality tools to ensure monitoring and alerting visibility to support our customer base.
Work with Agile methodologies to deliver platform services and features.
What We Want You To Be
Think big, and think efficient. You'll be responsible for thousands of servers, so you'll need to be accomplished at automating time-consuming tasks.
Be passionate about reliability. At our scale, even small outages can cost millions. Every service we build needs to withstand datacenter failure or other catastrophic events without downtime.
Be a good "partner". Production Engineers should work closely, and cooperatively, with other teams. Don't be afraid to check in code! Know how to take ownership without being territorial. Communicate clearly & deliver on your promises.
Learn fast and "own" your education. We provide plenty of training, but we expect you to be a useful contributor quickly, and to seek out any knowledge you're missing.
Be interested in the technology. New innovations are happening in this space every day. You'll be helping to make many of them a reality!
Have a long-term vision. What will your services look like 2-5 years from now? What new technologies will help them get there? What aging technologies should we move away from?
Value autonomy. We meet frequently to talk about engineering standards, but beyond that, you'll call the shots, you'll meet with stakeholders, and you'll be accountable for the smooth operation of your assigned properties.
Have broad technical knowledge. Since you’ll often work independently, you’ll need a variety of technical skills to be effective.
Required Qualifications
Master's or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science (or related field) or equivalent experience.
Experience in operational reliability, security, authorization, automation, optimization, monitoring, configuration management, debugging and troubleshooting in Unix/Linux environment, and high availability solutions
Strong on scripting languages (python, bash, Go, ruby, etc) with emphasis on writing modular, scalable code
Experience collaborating with technical teams in remote and international locations using excellent verbal and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in the use of open source tools and systems; comfortable with open source community and collaborative merit-based work where all ideas are heard and the best ones are implemented
Experience with design, implementation and operation of large scale distributed systems
Experience with CI/CD systems and deployment tooling, like Ansible and Chef
Experience with monitoring and log analysis systems, like Splunk
