Checkout changes store currency but not locale menu

When changing shipping destination in the checkout, the currency changes, as expected. Navigating back to the storefront (for example, clicking the cart icon in the header of the checkout), results in the store's currency changing to this currency. Is this intended?

Also, the currency/region selector in the footer remains unchanged.
