Homeschool Curriculum Packages: Unit Studies

The unit study form of homeschooling takes an interdisciplinary approach
to learning. Rather than separate out each of the curriculum areas, a single
topic is selectd to study in depth. All of the subjects that make up a typical
school day are covered, but they are centered on a single topic.

For example, a unit may consist of studying the Revolutionary War. In addition
to history, students would learn geography by studying the location of important
battles. Language arts could be covered by having the student read first hand
accounts of the period and pretend to be a newspaper reporter covering the events
of the day. Lastly science might be incorporated by studying the inventions and
investigations of Benjamin Franklin.

As time has gone on more homeschooling parents have left traditional
work- and textbook schooling behind and started to use unit studies
as a primary method of teaching. Because of their inter-disciplinary
nature, unit studies can be much more interesting than other types of
homeschool instruction. In addition, unit studies encourage the development
of creativity and imagination, and help children learn to see things
in an integrated manner.
