I'm having the same issue, did you ever figure this out?

Whoever else will get this problem in the future, just hold the "BOOT" button on the BlueRetro adapter dongle (the only one on it) and simultaneously press "Flash NodeMCU" in the NodeMCU PyFlasher while you're still holding the "BOOT" button. Worked like a charm for me.
P.S. Not sure why developers didn't mention that in the manual.
