The crate does not empty, despite ores appearing on the conveyor.
What you expected to happen
For the number of ores in the crate to go down.
What actually happened
The number of ores in the crate only goes up, not down.
Steps to reproduce
Mine a bunch of stuff
Put it in a crate
Shove the crate into the outside ore unloading machine
Ores appear on the conveyor belt, and are able to be processed, but are not deducted from the crate and are functionally infinite.
Further testing shows that it seems to just be a cosmetic bug. Putting more ore into the crate after it's been emptied resets the counter, and then begins tracking properly.
